Matthew 21:33-43 (New American Standard Bible)

Parable of the Landowner
33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.

34"When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce.

35"The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.

36"Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.

37"But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

38"But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.'

39"They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40"Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"

41They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons."

42Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures,
'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;
THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,
AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?

43"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it.

Today's readings focus on different aspects of the vine image.

I live near a vineyard, and year by year I admire the workers who take such care of the vines. When we read the first reading today we feel the disappointment of the landowner at the poor vintage. We are not told what went wrong, only that the vines produced sour grapes. This poem or song is applied to the relationship between God and Israel. The landowner is God, ever faithful in his covenant; the vineyard is Israel, so inconsistent in fidelity.

The gospel parable seems to have been directed at the religious leadership in Jerusalem where Jesus was rejected. When the parable was retold among the early Christians years later it would be understood in the light of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

For our prayer today, we could focus on the desire of Jesus that we, his followers, produce a rich vintage in our lives.

Salesian's Mediation

UNITY OF DIRECTION

Another help towards promoting vocations has to do with confessors. It is necessary that the boys be directed by confessors who all have the same spirit. It happens quite frequently that very fine priests come and stay in our houses who are not Salesians and who do not share our spirit. Although they may be very holy men they do not know our spirit and give direction that is contrary to that which we give and so the boys lose confidence in their confessor and in the rector. A Salesian came to get my advice on a question at the retreat at Lanzo on a very delicate matter of conscience; then he went to consult another confessor who was not one of us and who gave advice diametrically opposed to that which I gave. That this principle be adhered to: no one should hear confessions in our houses who has not the approval of the rector. Priests who do not belong to our congregation should never be regular confessors even they be holy men like Monsignor Belasio or Father Persi. This rule should have no exception. We should also go slowly in asking newly ordained priests to be regular confessors.

Another danger to vocations and to the smooth running of the house are those who want to be the center of attraction with the boys. We must insist in all our houses that the central figure is the rector. The usual answer to one who comes asking for advice should be: what does the rector think? Ask the rector. Discuss the matter with him, have full confidence in him and you will find that all works out well. He has been given the task from the Lord to look after your needs. He will be given special lights to see what should be done and what should be avoided.

CHARITY ATTRACTS

Talking on vocations once again Don Bosco had this to say which form reflections for the next two days.

As far as we are concerned the foundation of all vocations is the frequent reception of the sacraments; let us stick to this most holy basis, seeing that communions and confessions are well made. But that is not enough. Having laid down this foundation we then must think of erecting the building, i.e. the rectors must speak about vocations several times a year. It is not just a matter of suggesting to the young people: be a priest or do not be a priest. They must be made aware that there are two alternatives: some will be saved by taking one way and others the other way; they should be urged to pray a lot that the Lord will make known to them which of the two they will take, where they will receive the necessary graces to walk that way well. They should also be advised to seek the advice of a confessor.

I am crazy now... There are a lot of students who discovers software and copying it without any authorization... It's OK for me, but the labor of finding and producing it is just very disappointing... if you ever copy a softeware to other people, please ask permission first...
